He Xiaoyan (何小顏)

He Xiaoyan (何小顏), a native of Dongguan, Guangdong, was born 1955 in Guangzhou, where he lived until he moved to Shanghai in 1963. He works for Orient Publishing Center of China Publishing Group (中國出版集團東方出版中心) as a deputy copy editor and proofreader. He is a member of the Shanghai Association of Chinese Poetry (上海詩詞學會) (1986) and the Philosophy Institute of Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations (上海市哲學學會) (1987). Since 1981, he has been a prolific writer of research papers and articles on literature, history and philosophy for publications such as Xue Xi yu Tan Suo (Study & Exploration) (學習與探索), Ci Shu Yan Jiu (Lexicographical Studies) (辭書研究), Sheng Ming Shi Jie (Life World) (生命世界), Zhongguo Jian Zai (Disaster Reduction in China) (中國減災), Wen Shi Zhi Shi (Chinese Literature and History) (文史知識), She Hui Ke Xue Bao (Social Sciences Weekly) (社會科學報), Jie Fang Ri Bao (Jiefang Daily) (解放日報), Wen Wei Po (文匯報), Xin Min Wan Bao (Xinmin Evening News) (新民晚報), and has published various treatises and co-authored works. His treatise Da Zai Bian 2100 Nian (Catastrophic 2100) (大災變2100年) is both a fervent call as well as a calm and rational reflection that directs readers’ attention to the looming ecological crisis and its implications for humanity. The Wen Hui Du Shu Zhou Bao (Wenhui Book Review) (文匯讀書週報) praised him as a pioneer author whose interest in environmental protection started all the way back in 1987.  Another treatise, Zao Hui de Wen Ming (Wisdom of Early Civilizations) (早慧的文明), which strives to show traditional culture in a new light, has been ranked among 2002’s top ten “unique collectibles” by Shanghai Xin Shu Bao (Shanghai New Books Weekly) (上海新書報). He also penned the treatise Hua Yu Zhongguo Wen Hua (Flower and Chinese culture) (花與中國文化), China’s first original work that offers a holistic view of flower culture. Featuring excerpts of ancient literature, diagrams, archaeological information, the work explores the role of flowers in every facet of Chinese mythology, philosophy and traditional culture. It has been widely cited and referenced by the academia. Another notable work, Hao Fang Shi San Bai Shou (300 Bold and Unconstrained Poems) (豪放詩三百首), is a selection of notable bold and unconstrained poems (豪放詩) from the pre-Qin era to late Qing era with his detailed annotations, the first of its kind in China. He has co-authored works in various genres including Bai Ke Zhi Shi Ci Dian (The Encyclopedia of Knowledge) (百科知識辭典), Er Shi Shi Ji Wai Guo Wen Xue Ci Dian (Dictionary of 20th Century Foreign Literature) (二十世紀外國文學辭典) and Zhongguo Gu Dai Zhi Hui Gu Shi (Tales of Wisdom from Ancient China) (中國古代智慧故事). He has also planned and edited books such as Xian Dai Zhong Hua Xue Ren Bi Ji Cong Shu (Notes for Modern Chinese Scholars Publication Series) (現代中華學人筆記叢書).
